The Trip to New Zealand – TKK10 PENABUR Pantai Indah Kapuk

Date: August 18, 2011 Author: astripurba Categories: News

PENABUR sent Ms Roselyne (TKK 10) and Ms. Sari (SMUK 1) to International Pacific College (IPC) in Palmerston North to have a short course on TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). The journey started on Friday, July 15th 2011 and ended on Sunday, July 31st, 2011. There we met the other teachers from Taiwan and Tarjikistan. We soon became friends and inspired each other with our teaching experiences.

IPC was not like any typical college or university. With relatively small class sizes, students in IPC get more attention from their teachers.
We were given the chance to observe a foundation class where there were only six students learning with one lecturer. With this very supportive learning environment, the lecturer was able to recognize each student’s strength and weakness so that he can help the student to improve individually.

During the TESOL course we learnt many subjects, like Error Analysis, Drama, Speaking, English through games, Critical Thinking, Listening, Reading, Phonology and many more. We had those subjects when we were in college but having another chance to learn them again from the very well-experienced lecturers of IPC was really something. All lecturers hold Phds and they were obviously passionate about their jobs. They came with piles of books, handouts, tables, journals, pictures and many more. Though some of the words or expressions were quite hard to catch, they would explain everything thoroughly so we could understand.

Special thanks are to IPC lectures and staff who helped us a lot, guided and supported us. It was due to their backing that we learned a lot during our stay. Dodi, Patrick, Bridget, Alan, Nonna, Farzana, Neil, Karine, Dana, Gillian, Hern, Will, you are all wonderful. We will try our best to apply the skills and knowledge into practice. We want to say so much, but we can hardly find the words. You were dedicated to ensuring our time in Palmerston North was perfect. Thank you so much.
